i first arrived to Austin in 2005, and it's taken me this amount of time to embrace the outdoors. i 've often joked that the closest my (African-American) family gets to the outdoors is the occasional bbq. seriously. i remember attending girl scout camp at a state park... my mother and sister came for the sleepover... however, rather than sleep in a tent or cabin, my mother chose to sleep in the mini-van (the thought still makes me chuckle). and that was my approach to "the great outdoors": anything that couldn't be experienced from a car or hotel room (or a contained, bug-less picnic site) was not of interest. fast-forward to 2010, and i am in a more adventurous state of mind. so i've been swimming in lakes and rivers, canoeing (twice), and plan to kayak next...
